Controversy over proposed 595,000 euro presidential armored vehicle

The Cypriot Ministry of Finance has requested parliamentary approval for the release of 595,000 euros to procure a new armored presidential limousine. The proposal, which was classified as confidential, surfaced in the press on September 5, 2026. The decision to initiate the purchase was approved by the Cabinet on July 16, 2026, and involves direct negotiation rather than a public tender, a process the Electromechanical Services Department defended as a standard procedure based on technical assessment of existing needs.

President Nikos Christodoulides expressed surprise at the news, claiming he was unaware of the procurement plan until it appeared in the media. He suggested that the document's leak from the House of Representatives was intentional and aimed at damaging his political standing. Conversely, political critics and opposition figures noted that the president leads the Cabinet that authorized the expenditure. The current vehicle has been in service since 2019, and officials argue that upgrading is necessary to ensure the safety of the President and visiting foreign dignitaries.

The parliamentary Finance Committee is scheduled to examine the funding request in a closed session. If approved, the vehicle is expected to be delivered within 12 months. Discussions have highlighted the tension between state security requirements and public scrutiny over government spending, with some analysts noting the high maintenance costs and physical wear of the current aging presidential fleet.
