Five more arrested in Cyprus over planned murder-for-hire plot

Police in Cyprus have arrested five Swedish nationals in the Paphos district as part of an ongoing investigation into a conspiracy to commit murder and participation in a criminal organization. The suspects, who include two 22-year-olds, a 21-year-old, a 25-year-old, and a 28-year-old, were apprehended during a coordinated police operation after their vehicle was intercepted. Inside the car, authorities discovered and seized a pistol, two knives, gloves, masks, and three mobile phones. A subsequent search of the suspects' residence in Paphos led to the recovery of eight additional mobile phones, 1,400 US dollars in cash, and various documents and notes.

This development brings the total number of individuals arrested in connection with this case to eight, following an initial operation on August 29 involving suspects aged 33, 34, and 35. The investigation was initiated after Danish authorities provided intelligence to Cypriot police via Europol regarding a contract killing plot targeting individuals in Cyprus. A Special Investigation Team from the Police Headquarters is currently managing the case in collaboration with international authorities. The five newly arrested suspects are expected to appear in court today to face remand proceedings.
