Survivors rescued in Nepal ten days after deadly floods

Rescue teams in Nepal have successfully extracted three survivors from a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydroelectric project, ten days after massive, deadly floods struck the region on August 26, 2026. The most recent rescue, occurring on September 5, involved a Chinese national identified as Lu Haitao, who was found approximately 225 meters inside the tunnel by a joint team of Nepali military and international rescuers. Prior to this, two Nepali workers were recovered on September 4. Army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet confirmed that medical teams are currently assessing the survivors' conditions.

The disaster, which has caused at least 1,280 confirmed deaths, has left more than 4,700 people missing. Rescue operations continue to face severe logistical and geographic challenges due to extensive debris and difficult terrain. While these recoveries have been described as miraculous, the region remains in a state of crisis as search efforts persist despite the significant lapse in time since the initial flooding. Authorities indicate that the search and recovery mission is ongoing in the affected areas.
