Diplomatic efforts continue for Cyprus settlement talks as UN envoy cancels visit

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides continues to work toward the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue. He has expressed hope that a document recording points of convergence, currently being prepared by the UN, will be finalized to serve as a framework for future discussions. The President remains in close contact with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, aiming to hold several meetings before traveling to New York for the United Nations General Assembly later this month. Negotiations between the two sides are ongoing, with chief negotiators Menelaos Menelaou and Mehmet Dana meeting on September 7 to coordinate the agenda for a high-level discussion scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, at the UN buffer zone.

Meanwhile, the scheduled visit of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, to Cyprus on September 10 has been officially cancelled due to health reasons. Her doctors have advised against air travel, disrupting the original plan for her to participate in regional consultations. Despite this, it is expected that the UN envoy will attempt to meet with both leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York in late September to assess the next steps in the peace process.
