Diplomatic efforts for Cyprus negotiations ahead of UN General Assembly

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides is intensifying efforts to resume negotiations on the Cyprus issue. Central to this strategy is the preparation of a document detailing existing points of convergence, which the President hopes will be ready by September 10, when the UN Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin is scheduled to visit the island. Christodoulides emphasizes that this document should be shared with both Cypriot sides and the guarantor powers to serve as a foundation for restarting formal talks.

Following the potential agreement on these convergences, the President advocates for an expanded conference to be convened, where the resumption of negotiations would be officially announced. The process would focus on addressing remaining divergences based on the established negotiating acquis. Christodoulides expressed optimism regarding the progress, citing ongoing discussions with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, including meetings scheduled in the buffer zone for the coming week.

Diplomatic activity is set to culminate in New York at the end of the month during the UN General Assembly. A bilateral meeting between President Christodoulides and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been officially confirmed for September 24.
