President Christodoulides discusses progress on the Cyprus issue ahead of UN summit

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides met with the mayor and municipal council of Morphou on September 7, 2026, to discuss the status of the Cyprus problem. Ahead of his upcoming trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly later this month, Christodoulides expressed his desire to hold two to three additional meetings with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. A meeting between the two leaders is confirmed for Wednesday, September 9, at the UN representative's residence in the Nicosia airport buffer zone. Preparatory discussions between negotiators Menelaos Menelaou and Mehmet Dana were held on Monday to coordinate the agenda.

In a recent interview with the Turkish Cypriot newspaper Yeni Duzen, President Christodoulides stated that while he and Erhurman could theoretically achieve a reunification solution quickly, external factors complicate the process. He emphasized that there is no 'Plan B' for Greek Cypriots and stressed that mutual compromises are necessary. The President also highlighted that his government is actively working to strengthen the country's domestic and international leverage. Ongoing diplomatic activities include his participation in the Egypt-Greece-Cyprus trilateral summit and a planned visit from the President of Israel, reflecting significant regional mobility.
