Leaders of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt hold trilateral summit in El Alamein

President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi are meeting on Tuesday, September 8, in El Alamein, Egypt. The summit, held at the invitation of President el-Sisi, coincides with the opening of the El-Alamein International Airshow, which serves as the diplomatic backdrop for the high-level discussions.

The primary agenda focuses on regional security, energy partnerships, and strengthening the trilateral cooperation mechanism. The talks take place amid significant geopolitical tension in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly following the August 7 signing of the 'Mecca Agreement'—a defence pact between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. While Turkey has reportedly sought Egypt's inclusion in this alliance, Cairo has so far maintained distance. Athens and Nicosia view this summit as a crucial opportunity to assess Cairo's regional stance and reaffirm their own strategic ties.

The meeting includes a one-on-one bilateral discussion between President Christodoulides and President el-Sisi prior to the main trilateral session, which is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. local time. Following the conclusion of the talks, the three leaders are expected to make official statements to the media to clarify their collective security approach and future cooperation.
