Fatal crash of a Greek Air Force Phantom jet at the Athens Flying Week air show

A two-seat Hellenic Air Force F-4 Phantom jet crashed on the afternoon of Saturday, September 5, 2026, during the Athens Flying Week air show at the Tanagra Air Base. The aircraft, which had taken off from the 117th Combat Wing in Andravida, went down shortly after the start of its demonstration. Witnesses reported seeing smoke before the jet lost altitude and impacted the ground, breaking into two pieces and sparking a wildfire in the vicinity. The event was immediately canceled, and spectators were evacuated.

Tragically, both pilots on board were killed in the crash. Authorities confirmed that there was no indication that the crew attempted to use the ejection system. Emergency response was significant, involving 95 firefighters, 29 vehicles, 9 aircraft, and 4 helicopters to manage the resulting fire and conduct search operations. Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias cut short his engagements in Thessaloniki to return to Athens following the tragedy. An investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway, with the site being secured by military and emergency personnel.
