Cyprus credit rating update and fiscal reform warnings
Andreas Charalambous, President of the Cyprus Fiscal Council, described the latest credit rating update from the Canadian agency Morningstar DBRS as an expected development that reflects the positive macroeconomic indicators and sound fiscal position of the Republic of Cyprus. The assessment highlights that the country's current economic stability provides a significant opportunity to address long-standing structural issues, including social inequalities and climate change challenges.
Despite the positive outlook, Charalambous cautioned that the proposed pension reform carries inherent fiscal risks that require careful management to ensure the long-term sustainability of the social insurance system. Furthermore, he warned that the upcoming electoral period could exert additional pressure on the state budget. The Fiscal Council is scheduled to publish a comprehensive report in mid-September detailing these economic assessments and outlining recommended strategies for managing these persistent structural problems.
