Cypriot police on high alert for weekend football matches

Cypriot police authorities have deployed significant security measures for high-risk football matches scheduled for the weekend of September 5-6, 2026. The matches involved include Apollon Limassol versus Anorthosis in Limassol, APOEL versus AEL in Nicosia, and Nea Salamina versus AEK in Larnaca.

Security operations involve hundreds of personnel, with 200 officers assigned to the Limassol derby, 230 to the Nicosia match, and 100 to the Larnaca fixture. Law enforcement will utilize anti-riot vehicles, drones for monitoring fan movements, and will conduct thorough checks at stadium entrances. Authorities warned that fans violating regulations face immediate ejection from the stadiums without warning.

Michalis Herodotou, head of the Office for the Prevention and Suppression of Sports Violence, stated that delinquent elements have infiltrated organized supporter groups. He expressed concern regarding pending legislative proposals for mandatory alcohol and drug testing at stadiums, suggesting such measures might increase tensions rather than provide effective tools for police enforcement.

This increased presence follows a recurring trend of heightened security for derby matches in Cyprus. Police continue to monitor the situation, with ongoing focus on mitigating potential crowd disturbances throughout the weekend sporting events.
