Police mobilize for high-risk football matches across Cyprus

Cypriot police authorities have implemented large-scale security operations for a series of high-risk football matches taking place over the weekend of September 5-6, 2026. Security measures were initiated for the Apollon vs. Anorthosis match in Limassol, the APOEL vs. AEL match in Nicosia, and the Nea Salamina vs. AEK match at the Ammochostos Epistrofi stadium.

Total deployments reached approximately 400 officers for the initial matches, with specific reinforcements including 200 officers for the Limassol game, 230 for the Nicosia game, and 100 for the Larnaca match. The police utilized anti-riot vehicles, such as the Aiantas, and deployed drones for aerial surveillance of fan processions. Additional measures included road closures and traffic diversions around the venues to prevent contact between opposing fan groups. The Head of the Police Department for the Prevention and Suppression of Sports Violence, Michalis Herodotou, noted concerns regarding criminal elements infiltrating organized fan groups.

Authorities have warned that individuals violating match-day regulations face immediate ejection. Regarding ongoing legislative proposals for mandatory alcohol and drug testing at stadiums, police officials expressed skepticism, suggesting such measures could potentially increase tensions rather than resolve them.
