Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announces a 2.2 billion euro economic relief package
At the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis unveiled a comprehensive economic plan featuring 2.2 billion euros in interventions designed to span through 2031. The initiative aims to support families, retirees, public and private sector employees, and farmers through tax relief, income enhancements, and housing support.
Key measures include a gradual increase of the minimum wage to 1,000 euros within 15 months, an annual 400-euro bonus for pensioners, and a 500-euro Christmas bonus for public sector workers starting in December 2027. Furthermore, the plan introduces zero tax for families with three children on incomes up to 20,000 euros and a new 2 billion euro housing program to improve property market accessibility. The government expects relief measures to commence as early as autumn 2026.
Mitsotakis emphasized that these measures strictly adhere to current fiscal limits to ensure economic stability and avoid European oversight. He described the strategy as a reliable fiscal roadmap that balances social support with national credibility, warning that exceeding expenditure limits would jeopardize the country's economic standing.
