Greece and Israel sign multi-billion defense agreement for air defense shield

On August 31, 2026, Greece and Israel signed a government-to-government agreement in Tel Aviv to develop the 'Achilles Shield,' a comprehensive anti-aircraft, anti-ballistic, and anti-drone defense system. The project, valued at approximately 3.035 billion euros, involves the integration of advanced Israeli technologies, including Spyder, Barak MX, and David’s Sling systems, supported by ELTA radars and a centralized command and control network. Approximately 750 million euros of the budget will be allocated to Greek defense companies, ensuring local industrial participation.

The system is designed to address modern security challenges and the shifting geopolitical landscape in the Eastern Mediterranean. While the collaboration is described as a strategic partnership rather than a formal military alliance, it aims to enhance deterrence capabilities and regional security. Plans are underway to integrate this infrastructure with Cyprus's existing air defense capabilities to create a unified regional framework. Development of the 'Achilles Shield' is expected to be completed within 36 months, with the defense systems being strategically deployed across the Greek mainland and islands to address specific terrain requirements.
