Rising fuel prices in Cyprus amid geopolitical instability

Fuel prices in Cyprus have seen significant volatility as of early September 2026, driven by ongoing geopolitical conflicts and international market instability. As of September 5, 2026, the average price for 95-octane unleaded gasoline stands at 1.619 euros per liter, with prices ranging from 1.545 to 1.718 euros. Diesel prices fluctuate between 1.795 and 1.989 euros, averaging 1.876 euros. The Consumer Protection Service continues to publish regional price data to assist consumers.

The recent surge follows military developments involving Iran, which contributed to substantial price hikes over the last six months. According to the Consumers Association, gasoline prices have risen by 29.2 cents per liter (22.2%) and diesel by 45 cents per liter (31.8%) since the start of regional hostilities, with a particularly sharp increase recorded in March. These challenges compound the long-term economic pressure experienced since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, when fuel costs reached record highs.

Looking ahead, consumers face additional financial burdens as the Republic of Cyprus prepares to harmonize with a new European directive. This policy adjustment is expected to result in further significant increases in fuel costs starting January 1, 2028, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the local energy market.
