Rising fuel prices in Cyprus amid international instability

Fuel prices in Cyprus have experienced a significant surge, driven by escalating international tensions, particularly following US-Israeli military operations against Iran. According to the Cyprus Consumers Association, petrol prices have risen by 29.2 cents per liter and diesel by 45 cents since the conflict began. As of early September 2026, average fuel prices are notably high, with petrol at approximately €1.619 and diesel at €1.876 per liter. Global crude oil prices exceeding $90 per barrel have further compounded these domestic costs.

Consumers face additional uncertainty as the temporary reduction in excise tax on fuel is set to expire on September 17, 2026. If the government does not extend this measure, prices at the pump are expected to rise automatically by 8.33 cents. Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry Michalis Damianos stated that the government is evaluating tools to mitigate these costs, noting that future price volatility is inevitable due to uncontrollable external factors in the Middle East. Furthermore, European directives are expected to drive further price increases by January 1, 2028, adding long-term pressure to the local market after the sector was previously strained by the 2022 energy crisis.
