Egyptian TV presenter sentenced to death for drug trafficking

A Cairo court sentenced Egyptian television presenter Sarah Khalifa, 39, to death by hanging on September 6, 2026, following her conviction in a major drug trafficking case. Alongside 11 other defendants, Khalifa was found guilty of forming an organized criminal group tasked with the production and distribution of synthetic narcotics. The verdict was reached after mandatory consultation with the Grand Mufti of Egypt.

Authorities reported the seizure of over 750 kilograms of drugs and raw materials during the investigation. The prosecution detailed the discovery of specialized laboratories, alongside unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Khalifa, known for her program 'Mission Impossible' which centered on crime and security, also operated a cosmetic surgery clinic and an event production business.

This case has drawn significant public attention due to the defendant's media profile. Following the sentencing, Khalifa publicly protested her innocence, claiming she has never used tobacco or any other substances. While the initial court proceedings have concluded with the death penalty, the defendant continues to contest the ruling, and the legal discourse regarding the severity of the sentence remains ongoing.
