Cypriot football players increasingly active in international leagues

A growing trend sees Cypriot football players expanding their careers beyond domestic borders, joining clubs across Europe and beyond. As of September 2026, reports indicate that between 24 and 28 players who have competed for the national youth teams are now active in 14 to 17 different countries. Key recent transfers include Nikolas Panagiotou, who moved to Utrecht in the Netherlands, and Nikolas Koutsakos, who joined Norway’s Start. Additionally, Stavros Gavriel and Stelios Andreou have signed with Portugal’s Nacional and Estoril, respectively, while Ioannis Kosti and Christos Sielis continue to compete in the Greek Super League.

Notably, Grigoris Kastanos previously became the first Cypriot to surpass 100 appearances in one of Europe’s top five leagues during his time with Salernitana and Hellas Verona.
