Cyprus announces new agricultural support schemes to bolster food security

The government of Cyprus has announced a series of new initiatives to support the primary sector, citing the importance of food security in the wake of recent international crises and the war in Ukraine. President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed two new support schemes totaling 1.5 million euros, aimed at offsetting rising costs for agricultural diesel and fertilizers, with implementation expected by February 2027. Additionally, a separate 1 million euro subsidy for agricultural supplies and pesticides is currently underway, and the cabinet has approved a framework to improve farmers' access to banking loans, with agreements expected shortly.

Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture Christos Senekis has initiated a broad consultation process with farmers, starting October 8, to gather feedback for the post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The current 2023-2027 CAP framework provides 454 million euros in funding. During discussions, the President emphasized that Cyprus opposes proposals by some EU member states to reduce CAP budgets, arguing that a strong primary sector is essential for an isolated island nation. The ministry intends to use the upcoming consultations to align future policies with the practical realities faced by Cypriot producers.
