Prince William to represent King Charles at King Harald V's funeral

Buckingham Palace has announced that Prince William will represent King Charles III at the funeral of Norway's King Harald V, scheduled for Wednesday, September 9. The 89-year-old Norwegian monarch passed away in Oslo on August 28. This decision aligns with long-standing British royal protocol, which dictates that the reigning monarch typically does not attend the funerals of foreign heads of state.

King Charles III, who is currently undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, has expressed his condolences to the Norwegian royal family, acknowledging the late king as a dear cousin. Both monarchs were descendants of the British King Edward VII. The 44-year-old Prince of Wales has previously performed similar high-level representative duties, including attending the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican in April 2025.

Princess Anne, the sister of King Charles, will also attend the ceremony in Oslo. Her presence is significant as she serves as the godmother to the new King of Norway, Haakon VIII. The funeral will mark a formal conclusion to the period of mourning following Harald V's death.
