By-elections held in Pera Oreinis following mass resignations
On Sunday, September 6, 2026, the community of Pera Oreinis held by-elections to elect a new community council and leader. The vote was triggered by the unprecedented mass resignation of seven out of eight council members following serious allegations and investigations into potential financial irregularities. Nicosia District Officer Andreas Chatzipakkos oversaw the process, which involved approximately 988 eligible voters across three polling stations.
Following the counting of ballots, Polykarpos Polykarpou was elected as the new community leader, defeating his opponent, Spyridonas Charalambous. A total of twelve candidates competed for the seven vacant council seats. The elections serve as a reset for the local administration after the community was left without a functioning governing body, and investigations into the alleged financial misconduct cited by the former members remain a central concern for the residents.
