Popi Christoforou, mother of Mari explosion victims, passes away

Popi Christoforou, a prominent figure who became a symbol of the struggle for justice following the 2011 Mari naval base explosion, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2026, after a long battle with cancer. She was the mother of twins Miltos and Christos Christoforou, who were among the 13 people killed during the blast at the Evangelos Florakis naval base on July 11, 2011, shortly before their 19th birthday.

For 15 years, Christoforou remained a steadfast advocate for accountability regarding the tragedy, consistently attending memorial services and public events. Known for her dignity and resilience, she raised her children alongside her husband, Michalis, and daughter, Georgia, before the explosion shattered her family. Her passing has triggered an outpouring of grief across Cyprus, with the Limassol municipality and various organizations, including SY.FAEL, publicly expressing their deep condolences.

Following her expressed wishes, the funeral is scheduled for this coming Thursday at the Agia Triada church. In a final act of remembrance, she requested that all attendees wear white clothing to the ceremony. She will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to the memory of her sons and her relentless pursuit of truth in the face of national tragedy.
