Popi Christoforou, mother of the Mari naval base explosion victims, passes away

Popi Christoforou, widely known as the mother of the twins killed in the 2011 Evangelos Florakis Naval Base explosion, died on September 6, 2026. She had been battling cancer for several years, with her health deteriorating significantly in the days leading up to her passing.

Her twin sons, Miltos and Christos Christoforou, were 19 years old when they perished alongside 11 others in the devastating explosion at the Mari base on July 11, 2011. Since that tragedy, Ms. Christoforou became a prominent public figure in Cyprus, tirelessly advocating for justice and accountability while honoring the memory of the victims at annual ceremonies. She leaves behind her husband, Michalis, and her daughter, Georgia.

Following the explosion, which profoundly shocked the nation, the incident sparked a long period of national mourning and critical investigations into safety protocols. Ms. Christoforou remained a symbol of maternal grief and resilience for fifteen years, as the Cypriot public recognized her for her dignified fight for the truth regarding the loss of her children.
