Death of Popi Christoforou, a symbol of the Mari tragedy struggle

Popi Christoforou, a prominent figure known for her long-standing advocacy following the 2011 Mari naval base explosion, passed away on September 6, 2026, after a battle with cancer. She was the mother of twins Miltos and Christos Christoforou, who were among the 13 individuals killed in the massive blast at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base on July 11, 2011. For 15 years, she became a symbolic maternal figure in Cyprus, tirelessly campaigning for justice, official accountability, and the preservation of the victims' memory.

The death of Christoforou has been met with widespread mourning across Cyprus, with numerous political leaders and officials, including President Nikos Christodoulides, paying tribute to her dignity, strength, and unwavering fight for the truth. In her final arrangements, she requested that attendees at her funeral wear white and blue, colors representing the naval uniforms worn by her sons at the time of their death.

The funeral service is scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the Holy Trinity Church in Limassol. Unlike her sons, who are buried at the Sfalaggiotissa cemetery, she will be laid to rest at the Agios Nikolaos cemetery near her father.
