Popi Christoforou, symbol of the Mari tragedy, passes away

Popi Christoforou, a prominent figure in Cyprus associated with the 2011 Mari naval base explosion, died on September 6, 2026, following a battle with cancer. She was the mother of twin brothers Miltos and Christos Christoforou, who were 18 years old when they were among the 13 individuals killed in the massive blast at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base on July 11, 2011. On the morning of the disaster, she had spoken to her sons at 5:44 a.m. as they headed to assist with firefighting efforts.

For 15 years, Christoforou campaigned tirelessly for accountability and kept the memory of her sons alive, becoming a public symbol of grief and resilience in Cyprus. Her death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, including Annita Demetriou, who described her as a heroic mother and a symbol of the tragedy. Christoforou's public life was defined by her dignity and her unwavering demand for justice following the loss of her children just two months before they would have turned 19.
