Trial for the Tempi train tragedy enters evidentiary phase

The trial regarding the February 2023 railway collision at Tempi, Greece, resumed on September 7, 2026, at the University of Thessaly conference center in Larissa, following a summer break. The proceedings, which involve 36 defendants, including former high-ranking officials and employees from OSE, ERGOSE, RAS, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, and Hellenic Train, have moved into the evidentiary stage after 25 sessions previously dedicated to procedural issues.

Testimonies have begun with relatives of the victims and the train drivers. Antonis Psaropoulos, who lost his daughter in the crash, testified and called for an investigation into the station master's mobile phone data, while also highlighting reports concerning the lack of fire resistance in train seating. During the proceedings on September 9, tensions escalated between Psaropoulos and Panagiotis Voulgaris, the father of one of the commercial train's drivers, regarding past interactions between victims' families, leading to a temporary court adjournment.

The court is expected to continue hearing witnesses as the legal process moves toward examining the core circumstances of the accident. Legal representatives for both the prosecution and defense are actively engaging in cross-examination, focusing on technical reports and safety failures that may have contributed to the severity of the disaster.
