Secondary school reopening leads to heavy traffic congestion in Cyprus

On September 7, 2026, approximately 41,000 students across 90 secondary, lyceum, and technical schools in Cyprus returned to classrooms, resulting in significant traffic congestion in Nicosia and Limassol. The influx of vehicles during the morning hours caused major delays, prompting many drivers to seek alternative routes and side roads, which subsequently became congested as well.

The situation is expected to intensify next Monday when primary school students join the commute. In response to the increased traffic and potential safety risks, the police have announced an enforcement campaign focusing on motorcyclists and moped riders, urging all drivers to exercise caution on the roads.
