Arrest made after string of eleven burglaries in Nicosia province

In the early hours of Monday, September 7, 2026, a series of eleven burglaries occurred across the areas of Pera Chorio Nisou, Agia Varvara, and Dali in the Nicosia district. The targeted businesses included five pharmacies, a kiosk, a mini market, a fruit shop, a gas station, a restaurant, and a cafeteria. In each case, suspects riding a black scooter smashed glass entrances using large stones or heavy objects to gain entry. The perpetrators stole cash registers containing a combined total of approximately 5,900 euros.

Local authorities launched an investigation, utilizing surveillance footage from several crime scenes. Three damaged cash registers were recovered in the areas of Idalio and Agia Varvara, and forensic evidence was collected from the sites. Following these investigations, police arrested a 17-year-old Romanian national. The suspect appeared before the Nicosia District Court, which ordered him to be held in custody for eight days.

Local officials, including Mayor Stavros Hatzigiannis, have expressed significant concern regarding the recurring nature of these incidents, noting that similar thefts occurred in the region in previous weeks. Police continue to investigate the possibility of additional accomplices involved in the crime spree and are conducting further forensic examinations to identify other potential suspects.
