Cyprus Police leadership to undergo changes due to upcoming retirements

The Cyprus Police force is entering a period of significant leadership restructuring due to the impending retirements of two of its four assistant chiefs. Ioannis Mavrohannas is scheduled to retire on September 20, 2026, followed by Giannakis Georgiou in early December. These departures will result in a turnover of one-third of the force's top-tier leadership within a three-month timeframe.

To ensure administrative continuity and legal compliance, authorities are moving to initiate the succession process for the first vacancy immediately following the departure of Mavrohannas. This strategy is designed to prevent a simultaneous gap in both positions, which are highly sought after by senior police officers. While the selection process is open to all senior superintendents, industry reports suggest that MMAD commander Sophocles Ionas and other senior officials are currently considered potential candidates for the upcoming vacancies.
