President Christodoulides holds telephone call with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides held a telephone conversation on the morning of September 7, 2026, with the newly appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham. During the call, President Christodoulides congratulated the British leader on assuming his new duties and expressed well wishes for his upcoming term in office.

The two leaders focused on the historical and multidimensional bilateral relations between Cyprus and the UK, noting that their cooperation has entered a particularly substantive phase in recent years. They discussed prospects for strengthening this partnership across areas of mutual interest, as well as the importance of ties between the European Union and the United Kingdom. President Christodoulides emphasized the strategic value of a closer relationship between London and Brussels, a priority he highlighted during the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Regarding the Cyprus issue, President Christodoulides reiterated that its resolution remains his highest priority. As part of their dialogue, the two leaders agreed to hold their first in-person meeting later this September on the sidelines of the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly to further discuss these regional and bilateral matters.
