Forest fire persists near Konitsa for eighth day

A large forest fire continues to burn for the eighth consecutive day in the Trapezitsa region near Konitsa, Greece. The blaze, which began on August 31, is likely the result of lightning activity in a remote, inaccessible area characterized by dense vegetation and deep ravines. Efforts to contain the flames are being carried out by 150 firefighters, 48 fire vehicles, and 10 specialized infantry units from EMODE. Air support, consisting of eight aircraft and four helicopters, has been deployed periodically to assist ground crews.

Civil protection authorities issued a 112 emergency alert instructing local residents to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and keep air conditioning systems on recycling mode due to heavy smoke. While authorities report an improved situation on September 7 due to decreasing winds, the fire remains uncontained. The primary focus for emergency teams remains the effective demarcation of the fire front to prevent further flare-ups, as the dense forest canopy continues to complicate suppression efforts by preventing water from reaching the ground effectively.
