Averof Neophytou leaves open the possibility of another presidential bid

Former Democratic Rally (DISY) president Averof Neophytou has expressed his readiness to support President Nikos Christodoulides, provided that a strategic agreement on the Cyprus problem is achieved. During an appearance on Sigma TV's 'Protoselido' program on September 7, 2026, Neophytou addressed the potential for a new presidential bid for the 2028 elections. He explicitly stated that while no final decision has been made, he would seriously consider running if there is no significant progress or a strategic resolution regarding the Cyprus issue. Addressing past electoral defeat, he emphasized that it would be for the public to judge if he chooses to run again, citing the political comeback of Donald Trump as a precedent.

Beyond the Cyprus issue, Neophytou expressed concern over the economic climate in Cyprus. He argued that despite positive state economic indicators, the average citizen is facing increasing financial difficulties. He categorized the population into three economic groups, noting that a significant portion of society struggles to make ends meet. Additionally, he criticized the current administration on various policy fronts, including the purchase of a presidential limousine, social inequality, and retirement reforms.
