European Commission denies agricultural payments to Turkish-occupied Cyprus

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has officially confirmed that no Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) payments have been or are currently being made to livestock farmers in the occupied areas of Cyprus. This clarification was issued on September 7, 2026, in response to an inquiry from Cypriot Member of the European Parliament Michalis Hadjipantelas. The MEP had formally requested information regarding European financial assistance in the northern part of the island, particularly in the context of a recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

Hadjipantelas had expressed concerns regarding the potential non-compliance with EU veterinary protocols, animal welfare standards, and food safety regulations in the occupied territories. He argued that gaps in official controls pose significant risks to the Republic of Cyprus, neighboring EU member states, and the overall integrity of the European Single Market.

While denying financial support, President von der Leyen affirmed that the European Commission remains committed to supporting measures aimed at eradicating foot-and-mouth disease throughout the entire island. The MEP welcomed the response, which settles the questions regarding the flow of agricultural funds into the occupied northern regions.
