Rising fuel prices and traffic congestion challenge Cyprus

Cypriot motorists are facing a double challenge in early September 2026: continuously rising fuel costs and severe daily traffic congestion, particularly in Nicosia and Limassol. Experts warn that the situation is set to worsen as schools and universities reopen, leading to an increase in vehicles on the road.

Looking toward 2028, further fuel price hikes are expected as Cyprus aligns with European regulations concerning renewable energy and sustainable fuels. Estimates presented to Parliament suggest an increase of 2.5 cents per liter for gasoline and 7 cents per liter for diesel. These potential costs are expected to place additional strain on household budgets, especially as daily vehicle usage remains essential for most residents.

Paris Nikolaou, a traffic expert and lecturer at TEPAK, attributes the chronic traffic congestion to a historical lack of long-term state planning and a reliance on car-oriented urban development. He argues that the current public transport infrastructure is failing to meet modern demands due to low population density and outdated planning strategies that favor private vehicles over mass transit systems.
