BMW introduces M xDrive all-wheel drive for the new M2 model

On September 7, 2026, BMW M GmbH announced a significant upgrade to its compact high-performance M2 model by introducing the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system for the first time. This marks a new chapter for the vehicle, which retains its rear-wheel-drive orientation while gaining improved traction capabilities when necessary.

The vehicle is powered by a three-litre inline six-cylinder engine featuring BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology, producing 480 horsepower. The powertrain is paired as standard with an M Steptronic gearbox equipped with Drivelogic. The performance improvement is notable, with the new M2 accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds faster than previous configurations. The system includes an active M differential that dynamically adjusts torque distribution, ensuring the car maintains its traditional handling characteristics. Additionally, drivers can utilize the M Setup interface to engage a 2WD mode by deactivating the DSC, allowing all torque to be directed exclusively to the rear wheels for a traditional driving experience.
