AKEL party initiates strategy for 2028 presidential elections

Preparations for the 2028 presidential elections in Cyprus have begun, as political parties adjust their strategies following the May parliamentary elections. While incumbent President Nikos Christodoulides is widely expected to seek reelection, opposition parties are positioning themselves for potential contests. The Democratic Rally (DISY) has formally ruled out cooperation with the current administration.

AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou announced that his party will begin formalizing its strategy and evaluating potential candidates in early 2027. Stefanou emphasized the goal of identifying a "winning candidate" capable of uniting forces that desire political change. He declined to state whether he would seek the candidacy himself, noting that such decisions are made collectively by the party. He also confirmed that AKEL remains open to broad alliances, including reaching out to the EDEK party and potentially engaging in discussions with the ALMA movement and its leader, Odysseas Michaelides.

Moving forward, the party plans to conduct internal discussions and hold consultations with various political figures and organizations. Stefanou has already reached out to the new EDEK president, Sofia Christodoulou Makri, to arrange a future meeting to discuss potential cooperation.
