Cypriot political parties begin preparations for the 2028 presidential elections

Political activity in Cyprus is shifting toward the 2028 presidential elections, despite the remaining time frame. President Nikos Christodoulides is widely expected to seek reelection, though adjustments to his strategy are anticipated following the outcomes of the May parliamentary elections. The Democratic Rally (DISY) has already ruled out a potential partnership with Christodoulides, creating a challenging landscape for his campaign.

Simultaneously, the main opposition party, AKEL, has initiated discussions regarding alliances and the selection of a candidate who can champion the party’s agenda for change. General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou, when questioned about his personal candidacy, emphasized that the decision will be made through the party's collective processes rather than individual ambition. The criteria for the selection involve finding a figure capable of uniting various political forces and personalities who advocate for a shift in current government policy.

The early onset of these maneuvers reflects the parties' desire to establish strong platforms well in advance of the vote.
