Political preparations for the 2028 Cyprus presidential elections

Cypriot political parties have begun preparatory processes for the 2028 presidential elections. AKEL, led by Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou, has announced it will decide on its candidate and potential alliances by March 2027 through internal collective procedures. The party aims to identify a candidate capable of uniting progressive forces seeking "real change" and securing a victory. AKEL is currently exploring cooperation with other entities, including EDEK, the ALMA movement, the Greens, and VOLT. While Stefanou has not ruled out his own candidacy, he emphasized that the final decision rests with the party's central committee.

Meanwhile, former negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis is reportedly evaluating a potential independent candidacy, which he would aim to present to the public regardless of formal party endorsements, though he seeks support from progressive groups like AKEL. Simultaneously, the ruling DISY party is internalizing its own selection process, with figures such as Annita Demetriou, Averof Neofytou, and George Pamporidis viewed as potential contenders. While President Nikos Christodoulides is widely expected to seek re-election, political alignments remain fluid as parties continue to define their strategies ahead of the official campaign cycle.
