Russia and North Korea inaugurate their first road bridge

Russia and North Korea officially inaugurated their first-ever road bridge across the Tumen River on Monday, September 7, 2026. The one-kilometer-long structure connects Khasan in Russia with Tumangang in North Korea. The ceremony was attended via video link by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean official Pak Thae Song. Named after the Soviet officer Yakov Novichenko, the bridge is designed to boost cross-border tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.

The project, which began in April 2025 following an agreement made during President Vladimir Putin's visit, took 16 months to complete. Accompanying the bridge is a new border facility at Khasan capable of processing 300 vehicles and 2,325 people daily. This infrastructure milestone marks a significant expansion of ties between the two nations, which previously relied solely on rail and air connections. The structure sits near the historic "Friendship Bridge," a rail crossing established in 1959. Following the ceremony, vehicle convoys from both nations performed the inaugural crossing of the bridge, signaling a deepening of the strategic partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
