Chinese ambassador reaffirms support for Cyprus sovereignty

In his first interview since assuming his position in July 2026, Chinese Ambassador Yang Yundong reaffirmed Beijing's commitment to supporting Cyprus's national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Speaking to the newspaper Phileleftheros, the ambassador emphasized that China remains dedicated to backing a comprehensive, just, and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem within the framework of United Nations resolutions.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Cyprus and the fifth anniversary of their Strategic Partnership. Ambassador Yundong highlighted that bilateral ties have followed a steady developmental path characterized by mutual respect, equality, and beneficial cooperation. Beijing continues to value Cyprus's role in promoting dialogue and cooperation between China and the European Union.

The ambassador noted that mutual political trust serves as the cornerstone of the relationship between the two nations, setting an example of successful cooperation between countries of significantly different sizes. No specific future diplomatic events or court proceedings were mentioned, with the focus remaining on the long-standing friendly nature of their bilateral ties.
