Teacher faces housing crisis in Apokoronas, Crete

A newly appointed teacher, originally from Thessaloniki, was forced to stay in a tent with her 4-year-old daughter upon arriving in Apokoronas, Chania, after failing to secure long-term rental housing. The educator, a music and theater specialist, was assigned to the Kalives Elementary School and neighboring institutions but encountered a lack of available housing due to the local tourist market, where properties remain occupied for vacation rentals until the off-season.

The teacher highlighted that despite starting her search well in advance, most property owners informed her that units would only become available for long-term lease starting in November. This incident underscores the broader challenges public sector workers face when relocated to popular tourist destinations, where seasonal tourism limits the supply of affordable, year-round housing options.

Following the public outcry on social media regarding her situation, the local Mayor of Apokoronas intervened to assist the teacher in finding a viable housing solution. Her case has prompted renewed discussion regarding the difficulties civil servants experience when taking up positions in highly developed tourist regions where the cost and scarcity of accommodation often prove prohibitive.
