National Guard marks Armed Forces Day in Cyprus

On September 8, 2026, the National Guard of the Republic of Cyprus celebrated Armed Forces Day with a series of commemorative events held in Nicosia. The day serves as a tribute to both current personnel and all those who have served in the National Guard over the years, honoring their commitment to the defense, freedom, and security of the Republic.

The official program began at 9:30 a.m. with a thanksgiving service and ceremony at the Church of Apostle Barnabas, attended by Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas. Later in the evening, at 7:00 p.m., an official anniversary event was scheduled at the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC), involving the country's political and military leadership.

In his daily order, the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou, highlighted that the ongoing occupation and regional developments necessitate constant operational readiness. He emphasized that the National Guard is undergoing modernization to incorporate new technologies and improve flexibility. He identified the force as a guarantor of regional stability and a pillar of security for the Cypriot people, noting that the institution continues to evolve through high-level international cooperation and rigorous training.
