Trial begins regarding death of Stylianos Konstantinou in 2019

On September 7, 2026, the Nicosia District Court continued the trial of 11 individuals—including the parents of 14-year-old Stylianos Konstantinou and nine social welfare services employees—regarding the circumstances surrounding the teenager's suicide in 2019. The proceedings focused on evidence presented by the victim’s former first-grade teacher, identified as E.S., regarding the boy’s living conditions and behavioral history.

Testimony revealed that during the 2010-2011 school year, the child exhibited signs of distress, including outbursts where he pushed desks and expressed a desire to flee. The teacher testified that the boy once stated his father physically assaulted him, his mother, and animals. Additionally, the court heard that the father had previously returned to the school with a hunting rifle to threaten the teacher following a multidisciplinary meeting where he felt his parenting was being criticized.

The ongoing trial aims to determine potential negligence by both the parents and social welfare staff. While the prosecution presents evidence of long-term neglect and abuse, the court continues to examine whether systemic failures contributed to the boy's death.
