Cyprus police leadership and unions discuss labor reforms

On Monday, September 7, 2026, the Chief of Police of Cyprus, Themistos Arnautis, held meetings with representatives from the Isotita police union and the Cyprus Police Association (SAK) at Police Headquarters. The discussions aimed to address long-standing labor concerns that have caused recent friction within the force. The sessions, attended by high-ranking officials including the Deputy Chief for Administration and Operations, were described as positive and constructive.

Key topics included a proposal for a voluntary retirement scheme, for which the Isotita union submitted a study suggesting retirement eligibility after 33.3 years of service or upon reaching age 57, without actuarial pension reductions. Other critical issues discussed were the implementation of a hazard allowance—currently limited to the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit and Internal Affairs—the need for improved insurance coverage for officers on duty, updated working hours, and the modernization of police operations. Specifically, concerns regarding the handling of mentally ill patients were also highlighted by the SAK.

The matters discussed will be submitted to the Ministry of Justice for further evaluation and potential implementation. These meetings mark the beginning of a formal dialogue process intended to resolve operational challenges and improve the welfare of police personnel.
