Ammochostos General Hospital records high emergency department traffic during summer

Between June and August 2026, the Accident and Emergency Department (A&E) of the Ammochostos General Hospital treated over 11,000 patients. This figure translates to approximately 120 individuals arriving daily seeking urgent medical care.

Charalambos Charilaou, spokesperson for the State Health Services Organization (OKYPY), attributed the high volume to the significant seasonal population increase within the Ammochostos district due to tourism. The department operates on a 24-hour basis without the need for appointments and does not turn away patients.

To manage the high demand, the hospital employs a strict triage protocol. Patient priority is determined by the severity of the medical condition rather than arrival time. Life-threatening cases, such as heart attacks or strokes, are addressed immediately, which inevitably results in longer waiting times for patients presenting with less urgent or non-critical medical issues. While the hospital aims to provide care to all, the surge in visitors during peak months frequently tests the capacity of the emergency services.
