Escalation of conflict between Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia

Between September 7 and 8, 2026, the conflict between the Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) and the Saudi-led coalition significantly intensified, involving mutual cross-border strikes and aerial bombardments.

The Houthi rebels claimed to have targeted Saudi Arabian infrastructure, including the Abha international airport, King Khalid airbase, and Aramco oil facilities in Abha and Jizan, using drones and missiles. This was stated to be in retaliation for earlier Saudi airstrikes in northwestern Yemen, which the Houthi health authorities reported caused 14 casualties and hit a prison. Conversely, the Saudi military coalition, represented by spokesperson Turki al-Maliki, reported that 73 civilians were injured by Houthi strikes against energy and civilian infrastructure in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran.

The Saudi-led coalition intervened in the Yemeni civil war starting in 2015. While the Houthi rebels allege they shot down three Saudi drones in the last 24 hours, the coalition has vowed to take all necessary measures to neutralize the sources of these threats.

Following these events, the Saudi military coalition has indicated that retaliatory actions are planned, while Houthi leadership has warned that their campaign against the kingdom will continue.
