Cypriot writer and publisher Vasos Ftohopoulos dies at 76

Vasos Ftohopoulos, a prominent Cypriot writer, director, and publisher, has passed away at the age of 76. Born in 1950 in Aigialousa, Karpasia—a region currently under Turkish occupation—Ftohopoulos spent his early years in Cyprus before his family relocated to London. He later settled in Thessaloniki, where he became actively involved in political, social, and cultural affairs.

Throughout his life, Ftohopoulos was a significant figure in the intellectual and public life of Cyprus. He founded the Aigaion publishing house and was widely known as the proprietor of a well-known tavern in Nicosia that served as a hub for artists and intellectuals. His professional contributions included numerous books, theatrical works, newspapers, and magazines. Ftohopoulos was known for his blunt and passionate public advocacy regarding the Cyprus issue, the island's history, and its Greek identity.
