EAC uncovers illegal solar power installations across Cyprus

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has launched a series of on-site inspections targeting unauthorized photovoltaic systems across the island. As of September 8, 2026, authorities have identified 22 confirmed violations out of 77 premises inspected. The breaches involve 17 cases of illicit system connections and 5 instances where the power output of authorized systems was illegally increased. These inspections are primarily focused on commercial properties.

EAC spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou stated that the agency identifies suspicious sites using digital software to detect abnormally low energy consumption patterns. In response to the ongoing crackdown, many property owners have preemptively dismantled their illegal panels or unauthorized additions to avoid penalties. This follows an awareness campaign by the EAC that warned of the impending checks, prompting a rush by violators to remove non-compliant equipment.

For confirmed violations, the EAC immediately disconnects the systems from the grid. Owners are then required to either fully remove the installations or complete the formal application process to ensure safety compliance and receive the necessary certification. The EAC emphasized that inspections will continue and will extend well beyond the initial list of 110 flagged properties as part of a broader effort to enforce safety regulations.
