Electricity Authority of Cyprus discovers illegal solar installations

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has identified 22 illegal solar energy installations following a series of on-site inspections conducted in recent days. The inspections are part of a broader crackdown on unlicensed infrastructure across the country, which was preceded by a public awareness campaign warning businesses and citizens that audits would soon take place.

According to official data, the EAC initially flagged 110 cases for investigation. Of these, 77 properties have been checked, resulting in 22 confirmed violations. Many owners, alerted by the EAC’s prior warnings, proactively dismantled their illegal systems or removed unauthorized solar panels to avoid penalties before inspectors arrived. For those where violations were confirmed, the EAC has mandated the complete removal of unlicensed components.

The ongoing inspections are not limited to the original list of 110 suspicious cases. The utility has confirmed that the scope of the checks will expand, as evidence suggests that the presence of non-compliant solar installations is more widespread than initially estimated. The EAC is continuing its audit process, with further site visits expected to take place in the near future to ensure full compliance with regulatory standards.
