Nicosia takes legal action against derelict Othello cinema

Authorities in Nicosia are escalating efforts to address the hazardous condition of the abandoned Othello cinema in Engomi, a site now described as a public health threat. Following intervention by MP Irene Charalambides, it was revealed that a September 2025 inspection by the Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) identified severe structural deterioration and public safety risks. The building has been largely abandoned for 20 years, with current reports documenting collapsed roof sections, rodent and animal remains, and pervasive unsanitary conditions.

While the DLGO has fenced off parts of the site and demanded repairs, progress has been stalled by disputes among the property's co-owners. In response to the ongoing public outcry and failure of the owners to comply with sanitation notices, the Nicosia Municipality announced on September 9, 2026, that it is filing an immediate lawsuit to secure court orders mandating the abatement of the nuisance and the restoration of safety. The Municipality clarified that while the DLGO oversees structural safety, the city is focused on legal action to resolve the health hazards, as previous administrative notices failed to result in necessary remedial works.
