Safety concerns mount over derelict Othello cinema in Nicosia

The former Othello cinema in Engomi, Nicosia, has become a source of significant public health and safety concern. Situated on the busy 28 October Street, the derelict building suffers from severe structural deterioration, including cracked concrete, which authorities admit poses a direct threat to both passers-by and potential occupants. The issue was formally raised by MP Irene Charalambides, who requested a status update from local administrative bodies.

Following a public complaint, the Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) commissioned a private visual inspection on September 29, 2025. The resulting report confirmed that the structure is hazardous. Despite acknowledging the danger, the Nicosia Municipality and the DLGO have yet to implement sufficient measures to mitigate the risks. Official correspondence from September 3, 2026, confirms that while the authorities are aware of the building's hazardous condition, they remain currently unable to take definitive action against the property owners.
